Takht Shri Hazoor Sahib To Get New Management Board

NANDED SAHIB, India—In a big relief to the Sikh community of the state, the government has decided to accept Justice J.H. Bhatia’s report for monitoring the functioning of the Gurdwara Sachkhand Shri Hazoor Abchalnagar Sahib of Nanded.

The decision, taken in the state cabinet meeting on Thursday, will allow the government to repeal the Gurdwara Sachkhand Shri Hazoor Abchalnagar Sahib Act, 1956, paving the way for formation of a new board with 21 members all from the Sikh community in order to monitor proper functioning of the Gurdwara.

“Of the 21 members, 19 will be elected through the election process and the remaining two members will be nominated by the state government. Of the elected members, nine must be from Nanded only, while the Nanded collector will also be part of the board,” said a senior officer.

Acting against the irregularities in the functioning of the Gurdwara board, the state government had in 2000 terminated it with immediate effect. Since then, the functioning of the Gurdwara was monitored with the help of administrators and the administrative committee appointed by the state government from time to time.

The Sikh community has since been demanding the formation of a new board and was upset with the delay. To study the matter in detail and come up with a solution, the state government had appointed a committee headed by Justice Bhatia which had submitted its report on August 8, 2014.

Gurdwara Takht Sachkhand Shri Hazoor Abchalnagar Sahib, also known as Abchal Nagar, is one of the five takhts in Sikhism. It is located on the banks of the Godavari river in Nanded city. It is where the 10th guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji breathed his last. The Gurdwara within the complex is known Sachkhand or “Realm of Truth”.

  1. If this management committee will effectively run one of the Takhts of the nation why does its formation (and any future termination) depend entirely on the whim of the local government?
