Punjab Police Guilty Of Kidnap, Murder And Illegal Cremation Of Jail Inmate

AMRITSAR SAHIB—On 15th May, when the worst fears of Bikramjit Singh’s family came true; Punjab Police confirmed he was killed by their own men during his illegal detention.
 
Bikramjit is said to have been kidnapped by men from the Counter-Intelligence Wing from Guru Nanak Dev Hospital where he was being treated for back problems.
 
Addressing a press conference in Amritsar, Police Commissioner Aulakh confirmed the macabre murder and said 13 people, including 12 policemen, have been charged with kidnap, murder, destroying evidence and criminal conspiracy.
 
“They tortured him brutally and, as a result, he died. They took his body towards Anandpur Sahib and threw it in the Bhakra Canal,” Aulakh said.
 
On 8th May, the body was found in a section of the canal falling in the jurisdiction of the Kiratpur police. Bikramjit’s body was cremated by Ropar police as unclaimed. In 2002, Bikramjit Singh was convicted of murder in Tarn Taran’s Algo Kothi village. Bikramjit, who would have completed his jail term in a couple of months, was admitted to an Amritsar hospital with an orthopaedic problem.
