Brahmpura Bags Panthik Constituency of Khadoor Sahib; defeating Harminder Gill, S. Mann and Baldeep Singh

TARN TARAN, Punjab—Earlier known as “Majhe da Jarnail” (General of Majha region), Ranjit Singh Brahmpura of Shiromani Akali Dal (B) has defeated his rival Harminder Singh Gill of Congress by a margin of 1,00,569 votes. Brahmpura led in all the nine assembly segments in the constituency, the least being 1,874 votes from Kapurthala segment.

A total of 4,67,332 votes were cast in favour of the SAD (B) candidate while Harminder Singh Gill got 3,66,763 votes. Fate of the former militant leader and former president of All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) continued in this elections also. He has contested elections several times, giving tough competition to his rivals however he is yet to achieve victory.

Brahmpura got the biggest lead of 37,863 votes in Khadoor Sahib assembly segment, where he had lost to Ramanjit Singh Sikki of Congress by 3,054 votes in 2012 assembly elections.  At that time it was predicted that Brahmpura’s poolitical career was over.  Although Brahmpura faced opposition from several party MLAs in the constituency, his victory proved the constituency was still a SAD stronghold.

AAP’s Bhai Baldeep Singh secured remarkable number of votes unexpectedly. He got 1,44,521 votes.

President of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), Simranjit Singh Mann, who had bagged unprecedented triumph with record margin from this very constituency in 1989 Lok Sabha elections, got merely 13,990 votes.
