TORONTO, Ontario, Canada—The 2014 annual Nagar Kirtan procession celebrating the 315th Khalsa Sajna Divas, or Khalsa Day Parade will be held on Sunday April 27 in Toronto.
The event is the third largest in Toronto in terms of participation, as it is attended by people from all the communities of Ontario. For the past 38 years Sikhs, have been celebrating Khalsa day in downtown Toronto. As in previous years, thousands of Sikhs will be coming to downtown Toronto, proudly showcasing the uniqueness of their religion, and joyfully expressing pride in the message and teachings of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
As in the previous years, there will be floats depicting Sikh history, and representing the Canadian military. Sikh youth will also display their Canadian identity while participating in the Nagar Kirtan procession. This year is unique in that it has been 100 years since the events regarding the ship Komagata Maru and its Sikh passengers took place. There will be a special float dedicated to the struggles of the early Sikhs who settled in Canada and their link with the ship Komagata Maru.
This year’s events s is customary will commence with the Morning Diwan worship service at the Better Living Center, CNE Grounds which will be the starting point of the Nagar Kirtan. The conclusion of the Nagar Kirtan procession will be Toronto City Hall, at Nathan Philip Square. A more detailed program will be given out as the April 27th event approaches. An annual souvenir will be released at all gurdwaras which have the details of the Nagar Kirtan procession, along with articles, and information relating to the Khalsa Sajna Divas.
