ANANDPUR SAHIB—Himmat Singh Shergill, a renowned lawyer has emerged as a strong candidate to win the Anandpur Sahib seat. He is contesting against other well-established politicians, however as per recent surveys, Shergill is believed to give a strong fight in the upcoming elections. He currently faces challenge from Prem S. Chandumajra, and Ambika Soni.
Sardar Shergill has been involved in fighting for the rights of the Sikh farmers in Gujarat, who have faced much discrimination at the behest of Narendra Modi’s Government. Himmat Singh Shergill was approached by Arvind Kejriwal to contest the elections from Punjab, so that issues of Sikhs could be addressed in Indian Parliament, where they have been ignored so far.
Himmat Singh Shergill’s ticket from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) surprised everyone at first, however he has now emerged as a possible Lok Sabha member. Aside from local and Gujarat Sikhs standing with him, he has also found support from Hindu and Muslim communities, who also feel suppressed by the current Government.
Himmat Singh Shergill’s candidature also received a big boost when Arvind Kejriwal visited Punjab. Many people living in villages of Punjab who were not aware of the fact that aside from Akalis and Congress, anyone else is standing in the upcoming elections. Shergill might lose votes to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate, KS Makhan, who is a well-known Punjabi singer with support from the youth for his songs.
