Renowned Sikh Scholar Dr. Gurbhagat Singh Passes Away

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—A great scholar and an important intellectual of the Sikh Society, ideologue Dr. Gurbhagat Singh passed away on  April 4, 2014. He had been in critical condition for two weeks after suffering a stroke. He had been transferred from Patiala to Delhi  for treatment, but his health rapidly deteriorated. He breathed last Friday morning in Delhi.

Dr. Gurbhagat Singh had retired as head of the Department of English at Punjabi University, Patiala. He had written various valuable books on Sikhs, and Punjab, and for many years had been working on an English language interpretation of Guru Granth Sahib, that he was about to complete.

The demise of Dr. Gurbhagat Singh is an enormous loss for the Sikh Panth, as he was considered to be a scholar with a deep study of international philosophy as well as world literature. His mega project of interpreting Sri Guru Granth Sahib in an international perspective was seen as very important by the entire Sikh nation who mourns his passing. Dr. Gurbhagat Singh, brother of the late renowned Punjabi writer Dr. Satinder Singh Noor, also worked on concept of Sikh sovereignty. He played an important role in Sikh freedom movement on an intellectual level, and was interviewed by Sikh24.com during the movement favoring of Bhai Gurbakhash Singh Khalsa.
