Attempt to Abduct Former DGP Shashi Kant in Chandigarh is Unsuccessful

Shashi KantCHANDIGARH, Punjab—An unsuccessful attempt was made earlier today to abduct Shashi Kant, former DGP (Prisons) Punjab by some unidentified persons.  Chandigarh police reached the spot in time and averted the incident.  Union Territory (UT) Police has claimed some arrests in this case, however details of the arrest are yet to be disclosed publicly.

In addition to supporting Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa (Haryana) multiple times last year, Shashi Kant has been running a campaign against drug smuggling in the state of Punjab.  Shashi Kant has blamed political parties in Punjab, including SAD (Badal), BJP and Congress for the increase in drug abuse.

Shashi kant has lodged a complaint with the Police alleging Punjab police as the main conspirators behind his abduction attempt.  As per a statement by the former DGP, the case of “Bhola” drug confessions was most likely the cause behind this attempt.  DGP Shashi Kant has been pressing the Punjab Government to launch an independent probe into the revelations made by Bhola about drug smuggling in the state of Punjab.  He has also blamed the ruling party of Punjab to be directly involved in the case.

Regarding his abduction attempt, DGP Shashi has leveled charges against Punjab CM Parkash Badal and Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal and said that if any tragedy takes place with his family, those very politicians would be the responsible.  He added that the aim of this incident was to derail his campaign against drug smuggling in which some ministers of Punjab were involved.

He also filed a PIL (Public interest litigation) in Punjab and Haryana High Court, in which he sought CBI probe of drug smuggling and drug addiction in Jails in Punjab.
