AMRITSAR SAHIB—Justice Markande Katju, chairman of the Press council of India (PCI), has said that Professor Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar who is facing death sentence in Tihar Jail Delhi, should be released on grounds of sympathy.

In a press conference, he said that he had already met the president of India to ask that the death sentence faced by Prof. Bhullar be commuted and negotiated with him over the legal point of view of his case which stands against the death sentence.

He said that the case has certain flaws and secondly he has already been jailed for more than 22 years and his mental condition is not well at present. In this situation, his capital punishment should be commuted and he should be released on grounds of human sympathy.

Upon arrival at Sri Darbar Sahib, Giani Gurbachan Singh, appointed Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, welcomed and honored him.

Jathedar said that during his tenure, Justice Markande Katju had delivered justice to all concerned and fulfilled his judicial responsibilities with full commitment and integrity.

He also said that raising his voice in favor of minorities is appreciable.

Expressing his feeling about Sri Darbar Sahib, Justice Katju said, “After visiting the holiest shrine of the Sikhs, I have been blessed with extraordinary joy and peace.”
