Five Sikhs Commence Five Day Hunger Strike in London to Raise Awareness

LONDON, UK—The Sikh Organization for Prisoner Welfare (SOPW) announced that five Sikhs have undertaken a 5 day hunger strike outside the Indian High Commission here.  The hunger strike in UK is being carried out to raise awareness of Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa’s plight in Punjab where he has been on a hunger strike since November 14, 2013.

SOPW reported that, “this is a continuation of the peaceful protest started by Bhai Gurbaksh Singh to demand the release of all Sikh prisoners who have served their sentences but continue to be locked up, as if the key has been thrown away.”

The UK based Sikh organization has done a lot of work for welfare of Sikh prisoners who are languishing in Jails throughout India.

The following five Gursikhs are the ones who have committed to fast for five days to show solidarity with Bhai Gurbaksh Singh:

  1. Bhai Ropinder Singh Khalsa
  2. Bhai Davinder Singh Khalsa
  3. Bhai Harvinder Singh Khalsa
  4. Bhai Gagan Singh Khalsa
  5. Bhai Manroop Singh Khalsa

SOPW has asked Sikhs living across the United Kingdom to take part in this peaceful protest.  In addition, the organization had announced that one person every day would take part in a 30 minute hunger strike to raise awareness of human rights  issues in India.  Volunteers are also organizing 101 hours of continuous Sri Chaupae Sahib meditation.
