Sikh Council UK Welcomes New Member Organisations

Sikh Council UK scukLONDON, UK—The Sikh Council UK has welcomed new Gurdwaras and organisations as affiliated members continuing its development from strength to strength.

Amongst those recently affiliating to Sikh Council UK are Sri Dashmesh Sikh Temple, Sikh Organisation for Prisoners Welfare (SOPW) and Sikh History And Religious Education (SHARE).

Spokesperson of the Sikh Council UK, Kulwant Singh Dhesi said, “Following the recent affiliation of Singh Sabha Gurdwara, Southall as the largest Gurdwara in Europe, we are very pleased to welcome these new affiliated organisations. SOPW and SHARE are two registered charities that are recognised and respected as leaders in their respective fields.”

SOPW is working to achieve justice for those Sikhs who have been illegally imprisoned and tortured by assisting Sikh prisoners and their families in India with legal, welfare, educational and health support.

SHARE provides a range of services in education, training, famine relief, religious and sports activities and has a particular expertise in developing IT and multi-media related Sikh resources. Perhaps the best known of these is the ‘Sikhi To The Max’ web resource which is used by Sikhs across the world.

Kulwant Singh Dhesi added, “I’m particularly pleased that SOPW is the first affiliated organisation to affiliate with three female delegates. This demonstrates the forward thinking of this organisation and will undoubtedly strengthen the Council and create a stronger voice for Sikhs.”

Sikh Council UK Co-ordinator of Affiliate Organisations, Surinder Singh Jandu, said, “The Sikh Council UK has been recognised by senior government Ministers as the pre-eminent, democratic, genuinely representative Sikh organisation in the UK. I am pleased that the Sikh community also recognises this by affiliating and supporting the Sikh Council UK.”

Gurdwara‘s and other Sikh organisations established for over two years are able to affiliate to the Sikh Council UK and send delegates to a twice yearly General Assembly. Delegates elect an Executive Committee which manages the day-to-day affairs of the Sikh Council UK and advocates on behalf of the Sikh community in the UK and Europe.

The Sikh Council UK has individual Gurdwaras and Sikh organisations affiliated directly as well as a number of local Gurdwara councils who affiliate with their combined membership. Each affiliated organisation pays affiliation fees based on the number of their delegates.

The Sikh Council UK (SCUK) is the largest representative body of Sikhs in the UK. They are recognised as the national advocate for British Sikhs in the United Kingdom and at the European Union.
