Tilak Vihar 1984 Victims Forced to Survive Without Electricity

NEW DELHI—Sikhs of the Tilak Vihar, Delhi area—who were recently in the spotlight after being attacked by a mob and the Delhi police—have now lost their rights to free electricity.  These Sikhs who reside in the neighborhood, which is often called the “Widow Colony,” were granted free electricity as part of a rehabilitation package, but after almost 30 years, this service has now been disrupted.

Many of the families that live in this colony include no bread winners as all of the male members were killed during the Government sponsored Sikh Genocide of November 1984.

Members of the colony have received official messages asking them to file applications to seek new electricity connections.  As per members of the colony, they were promised free electricity as per the rehabilitation scheme, however the Electricity Board has denounced such promises.  It has alleged that no such records exist with the board.  As per a statement by the board, the local Government is losing Rs. 50 Million by providing free electricity to the 1984 victim families.
