AMRITSAR SAHIB—Giani Gurbachan Singh, appointed Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, is looking at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to raise the issue of hate crimes against Sikhs living in the United States. Manmohan Singh is scheduled to attend talks at the White House today to discuss various issues.
The statement by Giani Gurbachan Singh has come after a recent attack on Dr. Prabhjot Singh in Harlem, NY. Dr. Prabhjot Singh was attacked because of his identity by a group of teens this past Saturday.
Although it is not known if the Akal Takht Sahib has sent an official correspondence to the Prime Minister’s office, these comments were shared while talking to reporters outside Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Giani Gurbachan Singh alleged that the increasing hate crimes against Sikhs in the US was a matter of “grave concern” and the Prime Minister of India must do his duty by raising the issue with his American counterpart.
While the Jathedar did however appreciate efforts by the US Government to track and halt the hate crimes, he said much is still to be done to ensure the safety of Sikhs.
Giani Gurbachan Singh also disclosed unofficial plans to form four committees that would reside in different parts of the world to resolve Sikh issues abroad. He alleged that Akal Takht would provide support to these committees and help them resolve issues locally.
These Jathdars / SGPC / Badals are a big hindrance to solving the overseas Sikhs’ issues. They have their own agenda to portray themselves as the “Supreme Leaders” of the Worldwide Sikhs for financial gains, which is totally uncalled for and erroneous on their part! They should stick themselves to Punjab quagmire!
