Gurmat Parchar Initiative Starts in Punjab’s Prisons

9881_mainAMRITSAR SAHIB—With the joint efforts of the Punjab Jail Division and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, a gurmat smagam was organized at Central Jail Amritsar.   The program in Amritsar was the first of its kind where Sikh parcharaks paid visits to inmates to do Sikhi parchar.

Giani Gurbachan Singh, appointed Jathedar, was present at the function along with the Hazoori Ragi Jatha of Bhai Jagdeep Singh and others.

Giani Gurbachan Singh expressed happiness at the parchaar being done in jails.  While appreciating the initiative, he voiced his thoughts that the day was “truly historical.”  He said that the program would not have been possible without the support of Kanwarbir Singh Gill.

Bhai Jagdeep Singh’s Jatha did shabad kirtan while the Dhadi Jatha of Bhai Jagtar Singh Majithia performed the singing of historical vaars (poems).

The prisoners appreciated the SGPC for taking a step to reach out to them.  SGPC also provided religious literature for the prisoners.

Jail staff, along with Kawanbir Singh Gill, honoured Giani Gurbachan Singh and others who have come to take part in the initiative.  Gill stated that similar programs will be held regularly from now on throughout the various jails of Punjab.
