Sikh Crematorium Opens in California’s Central Valley

FRESNO, California, USA—The management committee of Gurdwara Gur Nanak Parkash, Fresno, CA. has opened operations at the Valley’s first Sikh Crematorium.  The inauguration for “Shant Bhavan Funeral Home” was held yesterday and was attended by local Sikhs in large numbers.

The crematorium comes after a large demand by growing Sikh community in Fresno, Selma, Clovis, Fowler and other nearby cities.  Although it aims to provide services as per Sikh traditions, the crematorium has a theater like set up and seating.  Various technologies, including large display screens for Gurbani display and continuous recitation of Gurbani is also provided.  In future, the management is looking to provide online broadcast and streaming.

As per the management, the idea behind providing these facilities is to comfort the families.  As per President of Gurdwara Gur Nanak Parkash, Dr. Boota Singh Chahil, “the community would feel more at peace because this is their own place.”  He further stated that “the crematorium is open for members of all faith”.

The funeral home is less than a mile away from Gurdwara Gur Nanak Parkash, both located close to the Clovis Exit on California Highway 99 in Fresno/Selma.
