Sikh community marks two-week anniversary

OAK CREEK, WI, USA— Two weeks ago Sunday a lone gunman with a history of supporting hate groups went on a shooting rampage at a Sikh Temple in Oak Creek.

Support is coming from all over the world for members of the Sikh community.

Kanwardeep Singh Kaleka says he’s been overwhelmed by it.

“Whether it’s people visiting or sending letters, sending flowers and calling, its been tremendous.”

Kaleka is the nephew of one of the six people killed. Three others were critically hurt.

Today, members of the Sikh community arrived in Oak Creek with a donation of $12,000.

“It was the whole community of Americans and Sikhs and Hindus, I mean everybody, its not only from Sikhs,” Kansas City Sikh member Amarjit Singh Sichewal says.

In all, the Sikh fund has topped $400,000. The money isn’t just coming in from the outside, donations also being accepted with the sale of t-shirts and bracelets commenerating that horrible day.

Kaleka says the financial support helps, but for him, it’s everything else that means the most.

“For me, it’s more of the actual efforts people make and the amount they reach out.”

First Lady Michelle Obama is scheduled to meet with family members of the shooting victims Thursday.
