Video: Casteist Practice Puts India to Shame

KARNATAKA, India—A video being circulated on Yahoo! India News has shamed the entire country. The video displays scenes from a ritual performed at a mandir in Karnataka where people of a low caste roll over the leftovers of the Brahmins in order to cure their skin diseases. This ritual, “Made Made Snana,” is performed every year at the Subrahmanya temple.

Several social and human rights organisations have been requesting the Government of India to ban this casteist practice . The Government of India has failed to take any actions despite there being numerous pleas for the past several years. Just this year, at the end of the ritual, which is carried out for several days, members of a fact finding team which opposed the practice were severely beaten up by members of the temple. All those that were involved in the violence have already been released by the police on bail, merely a day after the brutal incident took place.
